CleanCar’s B2B fleet electric mobility profiling solution up scales. This is to manage the increasing Consumer demand for personal EV suitability and cost-benefit advice.



Demand for a personalised, evidence-based EV suitability rating with definitive cost-benefit proof increases significantly, as Private Motorists accelerate their desire to lease or purchase comparable EV’s, switching from their current petrol/diesel make and model of choice.

Motorists can now use their own vehicle usage data to fully inform their financial decision-making in the switch to a suitable, fit for purpose electric car.


Web Summit 7 attendees can see first hand how, on average, motorists (in the UK at least) see around a £2,000 annual saving when making the switch to electric mobility. That’s a decent all-inclusive family vacation or pays most if not all of an average family’s yearly utility bills (including electric!).


You can now get an accurate steer on your suitability to switch with CleanCar’s self-service online calculator which, by answering a few simple questions, will indicate your suitability rating to change to an electric vehicle.


Based on your suitability rating result, you can then go on use CleanCar’s system to establish an accurate Whole Life Cost analysis comparing your existing vehicle (new model) with recommended ‘fit for purpose’ equivalent EV’s available on the market today.


CleanCar’s system uses either a small self-fit plug-in device or a mobile app to record journey data via GPS and then applies its algorithm’s to personalise both an accurate suitability rating as well as a detailed cost analysis called Whole life Cost. C02 & NOX emissions reductions are also calculated based on mileage data.


The resulting report covers off all the upfront and ongoing running costs of purchase or lease, tax, maintenance, fuel and resale value to work out a monthly or annual net cost benefit for a range of recommended EVs compared with the usage profile and costs of the current car’s new model equivalent. Oh, and it also reports when you are not suitable to switch based on the cost, range and specifications of all current EV’S on the market today, matched against the individual’s usage suitability profile and in these circumstances, CleanCar additionally recommends comparable low emission rated ICE vehicles.


Global EV’s sales are predicted to reach and exceed at least 40% of all new car sales in the next few years. In Europe this trend is no doubt encouraged by both National and Local transport planning trends as many cities globally are introducing low/zero emission clean air zones that restrict non-compliant vehicles in their drive to clean up air quality, save lives and improve overall health and wellbeing of its citizens.


CleanCar’s technology has some valuable and exciting side benefits that the team are keen to explain.  Such as its ability to provide mission-critical data for Vehicle to Grid systems (successful long-term V2G trials in the UK prove the point) plus its ability to pinpoint suitable charge infrastructure equipment (equipment suitability & installation cost comparisons) in addition to accurate ‘location’ mapping for fleet charge point infrastructure.

Who can see your journeys?

Short answer, only you. Only drivers can see their journeys with the journey detail hidden from your manager, your colleagues or your employer; there is no way for anyone to look at your business or personal trips. CleanCar is not designed to track what you do but is a system that will use journey data to show your suitability to an electric vehicle. We will never share your journey details with anyone unless you give us explicit permission to do so.

Data processing at night.

Your trips will be captured by the CleanCar device and sent to your unique CleanCar account that only you can log into. The journeys will be sent using a 2G or 3G mobile network, which will send the data into your account in the early hours of the following morning.For example, your Monday trips will be processed and uploaded in your account on Tuesday morning.

Is CleanCar new?

No, it’s not the CleanCar system has been assisting the fleet market to make the switch for about four years. However, the latest version of CleanCar, the one you are using is very new. This version has been rebuilt from the ground up to aim at individual users as opposed to fleets.

Who are the team behind CleanCar?

How does the device work?

The CleanCar device (we must find a catchier name, send ideas to is an incredibly smart piece of kit, but for this FAQ, we will keep it simple.

  • The CleanCar device has been designed to record GPS coordinates of your location while you are driving
  • It will do this every 10 seconds or 100 metres or 25-degree change in direction so on a winding road it takes more coordinates and on a straight one less.
  • The device saves these coordinates and every few minutes it connects to the mobile network via an onboard sim and uploads these to the CleanCar portal. It will store around ten days of driving if for any reason there is no signal.
  • Once we receive the data, we store it up, and while most people are asleep in the early morning, our servers and algorithms convert it into journeys and statistics.
  • The following day you will be able to log in see your stats.
  • CleanCar aims to help users like you to make the switch from your internal combustion engine to an electric vehicle

In the time that we have been providing the CleanCar solution, we have worked with some very large organisations many of which have good solid union representation.

However, this “One Page” overview is about what CleanCar is, how it works and how we use the data…

Overview of CleanCar

So, CleanCar is an easy to deploy ‘vehicle usage profile’ data gathering method that (via a simple self-install device or Smartphone app) proves suitability and also provides accurate cost-benefit analysis to fully inform the decision making process to switch from petrol or diesel powered vehicles to their electric vehicle equivalents.

It helps a driver and company to see:

  •  If current diesel or petrol vehicle is or is not suited to a switch to an electric vehicle.
  • If making the switch to an EV will save the driver any money
  • What type of chargers are required and where they should be located?

In fact, what does CleanCar do exactly?

·         Establishes your vehicles ‘usage profile suitability’ to switch to electric

·         Details the cost savings with an accurate Whole Life Cost analysis report

·         Recommends best-fit EV replacement vehicle/s

How does it do all that?

·         By accurately profiling a vehicle/drivers regular vehicle usage profile

So, why bother with CleanCar and Electric Vehicles?

  • Many organizations experience cost savings of more than £2000 per year by driving an EV when compared to an equivalent diesel or petrol and save on greenhouse gasses.
  • The government are also introducing clean air zones as they will be requiring  vehicles in many cities to be zero emission to enter or pay a significant levy.

1.    Drivers journey details are never shared with a manager or an employer only if the employee gives specific permission to do so the permission is sought separately so is not something a user can do accidentally.

2.     Fleet decision makers will only see reports that show aggregate statistics of the vehicle that helps to prove suitability.

3.      Indeed customers can use data to show electric vehicle suitability, potential cost savings and ideal infrastructure locations.

4.     Data will not be used to improve driving or behaviour and certainly not to alert an employer of any speeding infringements.

A brief history of CleanCar and a look to the future… In the words of Alex Baker, CEO and founder.


Welcome to CleanCar and thanks for taking the time to visit this page.  As a user of the CleanCar system, you may find it useful to have a brief understanding. A understanding of how CleanCar’s solution developed over the past 5 years. We will be explaining how we plan to further evolve, with the help of customers and partners like you, in the future. This document intends to do just that.

CleanCar started as a happy accident…

A kind of eureka moment borne out of necessity.  It began back in 2013 when at the time I was running a GPS Mileage Expenses business. The business that enabled Fleets and their drivers to automate their HMRC mileage expense claim process. This was also a fleet solutions company. It was via a self-install plug-in GPS device which collected their journey data to automate their claim form submissions. Drivers and admin staff simply logged into our system and selected which trips were private or business. Once completed it then created an HMRC compliant mileage expense claim. The mileage expenses business was going well, but like most technology start-ups. We needed funds to develop the system and grow the team.

So, proving Plato’s “necessity is the mother of invention” quote, whilst I was looking for funding for the business particularly from grant funding sources. It became clear that zero funding was available for mileage expense solutions. Although there were many grants on offer if I had a system with a ‘sustainability and green’ angle that promoted cleaner transport uptake.

I quickly realised that what we had at the core of our GPS mileage system. With a bit of work and re-development, was not just a slightly “greener” sustainable product but something compelling that could help shape the electric mobility sector. As electric vehicle technology was growing and improving and it still is now…

To help explain…

It’s probably easier if I take you back a little into my previous corporate life. This is when I worked for large vehicle funders (Lloyds Bank and General Electric). My role was to help large Enterprise Fleets to efficiently fund vehicle lease or purchase plus aid operating cost reductions. One of the most incredibly effective tools a fleet could use to achieve these aims was something we called whole life cost (also known as the total cost of ownership). 


WLC looks at all the costs of running a vehicle over a given time and mileage such as depreciation, maintenance, fuel, tax servicing etc.  What it effectively enabled fleets to do was to identify more ‘fit for purpose’ vehicles with better engines and higher residual values as opposed to less suitable vehicles. In other words, a car costing £25k to purchase could actually cost less over three years than one costing £20k.

When it comes to electric vehicles (EV’s), Whole Life Cost (for the right driver/vehicle usage profile) can work very well. For example, where an EV purchase price can be higher than an equivalent diesel or petrol equivalent, (check out our various blogs for more info) but the running costs, especially for fuel, tax and servicing, can be significantly less. You end up with a net cost benefit from driving the EV cars. That’s not the only EV benefit. There are benefits of electric vehicles out there but not a lot of people take note to. It’s quite surprising.

The problem with WLC is it’s complexity as it requires lots of proprietary data that only exists in the Fleet and Auto industries. By this it means your average driver can’t work it out or even gain access to the relevant data to do so! Also, before trying to work it out if an EV is more cost-effective than the existing petrol/diesel vehicle. The first step is to evaluate accurately if an EV is even a practical option for its specific and in some circumstances, unique usage roster, i.e. is it suitable and fit for purpose?

That was the Eureka moment. I realised that we had a way of:

  1. Using GPS data to understand how someone uses their current vehicle
  2. Show that person if they are suitable to switch to an electric vehicle or not
  3. Show which current EV’s match their needs
  4. Explain how much it would cost them to run an EV compared to a new version of their current car
  5. Show them the positive environmental impact in terms of actual mileage based CO2 and N0X emissions reductions
  6. Help them to make a fully informed decision to prove the case for ‘transition’ from internal combustion to EV cars

So we had an idea on how we could evolve our GPS platform. We applied to some grant funding and, we got some early success….we got really excited, we built an early prototype and engaged with customers… and. Nothing! Nada!

Everyone (mainly fleets) we talked to loved our system. They loved the concept and they thought it was great but they also thought that these new-fangled electric vehicles would just fly off the shelves.  So, we got on with the day job and focused our minds back on the Mileage Expenses customers, knowing electric car technology was still around and being made.

The problem with CleanCar/CleanPea –

The problem with CleanCar (or cleanpea as we called it back then) is we were a bit too early. A common ailment of tech startups, but before too long, the same fleets we had spoken to before started to realise that their drivers were not rushing in droves to buy into electric cars as they were scared! They were scared that the 96 mile range of an electric car or van would not be enough, and would leave them stranded. Range anxiety was born! Before long the phones started to ring and CleanCar was re-born.

For a couple of years, we happily ran the CleanCar business. Servicing the needs of our fleet customers, but I had always yearned for more as I wanted to help the man on the street to make the switch to an EV as, after all, that would be a far more significant impact than just servicing the fleet industry and helping a fleet make the switch to an Electric Fleet.

Roll forward to February this year 2018.

It was time for a change as, for a long time, my heart had been committed to CleanCar. It was difficult, expensive and time-consuming to run two businesses. So, it was time to make some big decisions.

How it happened –

After a number of conversations, some quite heated ones with my fellow shareholders, we decided it was time to split the business. Send the mileage expenses off in one direction and CleanCar in another. It was agreed that The Virtual Forge, one of our early investors and a leading tech development outfit, would buy a majority shareholding in CleanCar and invest heavily into building the team and developing the platform.

The deal was struck back in June this year. Since then, with a huge amount of activity, the team has tripled in size. The Platform development effort has been tremendous and the result is one that I am extremely proud of.

The aims of CleanCar

The aim of all this effort was to build a system. A system that would be capable of handling millions of users as opposed to just thousands of users. In many respects, It was like building a rally car. In that we kept a shell of a system and rebuilt, updated or tinkered with every component removing anything that was surplus to requirements. Then, put in a much better high performance (electric) engine!


The CleanCar system we have today is the early production system. With all the new shiny parts and the new engine, but like a new rally team we still need to prove ourselves. We have a lot of work to do in learning how users want to interact with the system. Continually upgrading and improving.  To carry on the metaphor a little, we are at the beginning of the rally season but we have a lot of races to win and a lot to learn, especially from you!.

Our plans for the future can be laid out as follows:

  1. We need to continually improve what we have. In other words, we know that users will get in touch to tell us the parts of the system they like. The parts that stink and ‘hey, I have a good idea’! We need to capture all this feedback and use it to continually ideas to
  2. We have a huge pipeline of new features we would like to build. Some features will get done, new ones will get added to the list and some will never see the light of day. The key point is we will always be working on this continual improvement process to make CleanCar better and slicker. We will ensure you get to know all the new ideas and improvements as part of this process.
  3. New ideas: we know that we have some powerful data and we are keen to see what other questions we can answer. For example; is there a city out there looking to electrify its taxis and install fast chargers? Could our system be used to help?

To summarise in a nutshell:

  1. We have a lot of experience helping fleets to switch from ICE vehicles to EV’s
  2. We know the process and platform that works is accurate in informing the ‘switch’ decision
  3. We now want to help private motorists, the consumer, to make the switch to electric mobility
  4. We have a new parent company that shares our goals and beliefs and is funding this change
  5. We have completely rebuilt the system to achieve these goals
  6. We expect some issues to begin with and actively ask for your valuable feedback
  7. We have big plans for further development
  8. We have an amazing team who are loyal, experienced and who all share my passion

“Absolutely yes, so the UK government and many other governments are on a on a mission to try and cut emissions in our cities the research shows that there is no safe level of emissions. It’s causing all sorts of health problems the issue that you have today is there was a lot of transport located or focus on a lot of areas in the city and that’s creating health problems from from poor air quality. One of the solutions to that is to get more electric vehicles replace internal combustion engine vehicles with electric vehicles. Ultimately that’s what CleanCar does you know it is a solution that helps to speed up the adoption of electric vehicles for fleets and for consumers.”

“Yes an enabler”

“Absolutely, yeah”

“Yeah, so we can’t lie we have met each other before and so what is Dreamtek’s involvement in CleanCar? What’s the journey been like from from kind of day dot all the way to where now.”

“So, Dreamtek you’ve been involved in CleanCar really forums from day dot.”Dreamtek have built the majority of a technology you know it’s being kind of my vision initially working with the team around Dreamtek you know designers or developers you know the database administrators so on and so forth to actually build the solution and and you know without having you know a DreamTek and the Virtual Forge Team around you know we wouldn’t be where we are today you know we are sister companies at one another you know and it’s been a it’s been a very interesting journey it’s been a great journey clearly was a bit ups and downs it’s technology you know we’re doing things nobody had done has done before.”

“Okay and so it’s very very complex as I’ve told me before but can you give me kind of a high-level grassroots kind of explanation of what CleanCar is and what it aims to do with it’s customers.”

Alex Baker –

“Well CleanCar’s complex behind the scenes but I think really whenever you’re delivering a solution it needs to be simple it often is very complex we’re done behind the scenes. CleanCar really can be can simply summed up, I don’t I suppose the elevator pitch is you know what we do is we take a small device like this and we can distribute that via fleet or directly to a consumer we also have an ID an Android and iPhone app as well and what you do is you place the device in your vehicle and you drive about as normal and all the time data has been sent to the CleanCar System and we’re running and flip that data for a number of different algorithms.

The main thing that we’re able to then do is say number one is that driver suited to an electric vehicle we can then also say of the electric vehicles they are suited to which potentially would be best suited to their requirements and as well as that we’re also able to say if you were to replace a like-for-like internal combustion engine you know the kind of vehicle you’re driving around with in today with a an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle will you actually see any cost savings.

Tom baldes  –

“mmm… that’s really interesting so before we get into whether I’m suitable for an electric vehicle and my background is very much automotive, you know I started off with a motor manufacturer when I was 17 years old mostly around sort of gas guzzling rally cars but then went into very much the sort of development of networks and so on to sell vehicles and so on and I also was very lucky enough this year to go to Portugal to the launch of the new Ipace for Jaguar.”

“Yeah I know exactly… it was very cold which was very random to see kind of where we’re at you know right at the coalface of this beautiful car that kind of encapsulated technology but also encapsulates the style of what is a very much heritage name and a heritage brand so I think we’re quite far along but from somebody on the inside of the industry like yourself what is the state of the the EV  market?”

Alex Baker –

“So, I don’t think the industry has done itself any favors up to this point. You know there has been some very strange vehicles I know you started to move ugly I would say yes yeah not necessary ugly but kind of Noddy cars I’ve heard people describe you know these days for cars really look a lot better they’ve got a much better range as in they’ll go a lot further and practicality wise they are as practical as as any other vehicle that’s out there certainly you know one of the things I hear a lot from people who drive electric vehicles is there a lot more fun to drive as well you know they are very very quick we were talking earlier about the P P 100 D test.”

Tom blades –

“Oh yeah of course that’s an absolute yeah yeah yeah yeah.”

Alex baker –

“That’s an absolute monster of a car to drive, the industry needs to do more you know when you look at the stats you know certainly we’re in our database there’s about 20,000 available variants on the market today vehicles.”

Tom Blades –

“Wow, that’s a lot more than I expected or twenty.”

Alex Baker –

“There’s 20,000 available total vehicles only point seven percent of all of those vehicles available electric and around about two percent are hybrid plug-in hybrids so on and so when you actually look at the percentages are available on the market was not a lot to choose from.”

Tom Blades  –

“Yeah and I think that’s it really I mean I remember doing an interview with some of the people within the network of the manufacturer I used to work for and they were screaming for a normal vehicle with an electric variant either you know or motor a very attached to it instead of these kind of newer shaped or kind of moon buggy style as you mentioned so I do want identify with that I mean again. I don’t identify with the facts as well.”

If your vehicle usage profile needs a 400+ mile range then currently (but with not too long to wait) EV cars are probably not the right choice at this moment in time.  Anyway, who needs range of 400 miles if every single day they start with 100 miles of range and have not driven more then 50 miles in a single day (think about that second car). Understanding the electric car technology will allow you to have a better understanding of how the vehicle works.
