What some Drivers experience through the switch –

Electric Vehicle technology is changing a lot. For some drivers changing from a diesel or petrol vehicle to Electric Vehicles can be frustrating… The thought of did I charge my vehicle last night? Will I need to charge again in the day? Have I got enough miles to get to this meeting? It is the anxiousness of knowing you do not have a lot of miles per charge but 100 miles is enough. You would quickly adapt to how many miles you vehicle would do. This is what we call “range anxiety” it occurs as drivers get quite anxious in case they run out of battery. Would you let your vehicle run out of fuel?  No, so why would you let your vehicle run out of battery.

The electric car technology is changing. It is changing for the better to improve the range on vehicles. However, charging points are appearing everywhere now so all drivers that feel panicky need to just plan their journey ahead of time. All drivers at first will take it as a shock to charge instead of fill up, but the more they drive the vehicle the more they will become confident in doing longer journeys. All you will need to do is have a few stops along the way.  These stops could be used to the drivers advantage, maybe to make a call, stop for a drink or just a rest on a long motorway journey.

Demand for a personalised, evidence-based EV suitability rating with definitive cost-benefit proof increases significantly, as Private Motorists accelerate their desire to lease or purchase comparable EV’s, switching from their current petrol/diesel make and model of choice.

Global EV’s sales are predicted to reach and exceed at least 40% of all new car sales in the next few years. In Europe this trend is no doubt encouraged by both National and Local transport planning trends as many cities globally are introducing low/zero emission clean air zones that restrict non-compliant vehicles in their drive to clean up air quality, save lives and improve overall health and wellbeing of its citizens.

What we do is we help to make that happen by taking a small device like this or an app, we place it into a driver’s vehicle and that driver just so you know uses their car as normal we collect that data. Who can see your journeys?

Short answer, only you. Only drivers can see their journeys with the journey detail hidden from your manager, your colleagues or your employer; there is no way for anyone to look at your business or personal trips. CleanCar is not designed to track what you do but is a system that will use journey data to show your suitability to an electric vehicle. We will never share your journey details with anyone unless you give us explicit permission to do so.

Data processing at night.

Your trips will be captured by the CleanCar device and sent to your unique CleanCar account that only you can log into. The journeys will be sent using a 2G or 3G mobile network, which will send the data into your account in the early hours of the following morning.For example, your Monday trips will be processed and uploaded in your account on Tuesday morning.

Is CleanCar new?

No, it’s not the CleanCar system has been assisting the fleet market to make the switch for about four years. However, the latest version of CleanCar, the one you are using is very new. This version has been rebuilt from the ground up to aim at individual users as opposed to fleets.

How does the device work?

The CleanCar device (we must find a catchier name, send ideas to is an incredibly smart piece of kit, but for this FAQ, we will keep it simple.

  • The CleanCar device has been designed to record GPS coordinates of your location while you are driving
  • It will do this every 10 seconds or 100 metres or 25-degree change in direction so on a winding road it takes more coordinates and on a straight one less.
  • The device saves these coordinates and every few minutes it connects to the mobile network via an onboard sim and uploads these to the CleanCar portal. It will store around ten days of driving if for any reason there is no signal.
  • Once we receive the data, we store it up, and while most people are asleep in the early morning, our servers and algorithms convert it into journeys and statistics.
  • The following day you will be able to log in see your stats.
  • CleanCar aims to help users like you to make the switch from your internal combustion engine to an electric vehicle

A brief history of CleanCar and a look to the future… In the words of Alex Baker, CEO and founder.


Welcome to CleanCar and thanks for taking the time to visit this page.  As a user of the CleanCar system, you may find it useful to have a brief understanding. A understanding of how CleanCar’s solution developed over the past 5 years. We will be explaining how we plan to further evolve, with the help of customers and partners like you, in the future. This document intends to do just that.

CleanCar started as a happy accident…

A kind of eureka moment borne out of necessity.  It began back in 2013 when at the time I was running a GPS Mileage Expenses business. The business that enabled Fleets and their drivers to automate their HMRC mileage expense claim process. This was also a fleet solutions company. It was via a self-install plug-in GPS device which collected their journey data to automate their claim form submissions. Drivers and admin staff simply logged into our system and selected which trips were private or business. Once completed it then created an HMRC compliant mileage expense claim. The mileage expenses business was going well, but like most technology start-ups. We needed funds to develop the system and grow the team.

So, proving Plato’s “necessity is the mother of invention” quote, whilst I was looking for funding for the business particularly from grant funding sources. It became clear that zero funding was available for mileage expense solutions. Although there were many grants on offer if I had a system with a ‘sustainability and green’ angle that promoted cleaner transport uptake.

I quickly realised that what we had at the core of our GPS mileage system. With a bit of work and re-development, was not just a slightly “greener” sustainable product but something compelling that could help shape the electric mobility sector. As electric vehicle technology was growing and improving and it still is now…

To help explain…

It’s probably easier if I take you back a little into my previous corporate life. This is when I worked for large vehicle funders (Lloyds Bank and General Electric). My role was to help large Enterprise Fleets to efficiently fund vehicle lease or purchase plus aid operating cost reductions. One of the most incredibly effective tools a fleet could use to achieve these aims was something we called whole life cost (also known as the total cost of ownership). 


WLC looks at all the costs of running a vehicle over a given time and mileage such as depreciation, maintenance, fuel, tax servicing etc.  What it effectively enabled fleets to do was to identify more ‘fit for purpose’ vehicles with better engines and higher residual values as opposed to less suitable vehicles. In other words, a car costing £25k to purchase could actually cost less over three years than one costing £20k.

When it comes to electric vehicles (EV’s), Whole Life Cost (for the right driver/vehicle usage profile) can work very well. For example, where an EV purchase price can be higher than an equivalent diesel or petrol equivalent, (check out our various blogs for more info) but the running costs, especially for fuel, tax and servicing, can be significantly less. You end up with a net cost benefit from driving the EV cars. That’s not the only EV benefit. There are benefits of electric vehicles out there but not a lot of people take note to. It’s quite surprising.

The problem with WLC is it’s complexity as it requires lots of proprietary data that only exists in the Fleet and Auto industries. By this it means your average driver can’t work it out or even gain access to the relevant data to do so! Also, before trying to work it out if an EV is more cost-effective than the existing petrol/diesel vehicle. The first step is to evaluate accurately if an EV is even a practical option for its specific and in some circumstances, unique usage roster, i.e. is it suitable and fit for purpose?

That was the Eureka moment. I realised that we had a way of:

  1. Using GPS data to understand how someone uses their current vehicle
  2. Show that person if they are suitable to switch to an electric vehicle or not
  3. Show which current EV’s match their needs
  4. Explain how much it would cost them to run an EV compared to a new version of their current car
  5. Show them the positive environmental impact in terms of actual mileage based CO2 and N0X emissions reductions
  6. Help them to make a fully informed decision to prove the case for ‘transition’ from internal combustion to EV cars

So we had an idea on how we could evolve our GPS platform. We applied to some grant funding and, we got some early success….we got really excited, we built an early prototype and engaged with customers… and. Nothing! Nada!

Everyone (mainly fleets) we talked to loved our system. They loved the concept and they thought it was great but they also thought that these new-fangled electric vehicles would just fly off the shelves.  So, we got on with the day job and focused our minds back on the Mileage Expenses customers, knowing electric car technology was still around and being made.

The problem with CleanCar/CleanPea –

The problem with CleanCar (or cleanpea as we called it back then) is we were a bit too early. A common ailment of tech startups, but before too long, the same fleets we had spoken to before started to realise that their drivers were not rushing in droves to buy into electric cars as they were scared! They were scared that the 96 mile range of an electric car or van would not be enough, and would leave them stranded. Range anxiety was born! Before long the phones started to ring and CleanCar was re-born.

For a couple of years, we happily ran the CleanCar business. Servicing the needs of our fleet customers, but I had always yearned for more as I wanted to help the man on the street to make the switch to an EV as, after all, that would be a far more significant impact than just servicing the fleet industry and helping a fleet make the switch to an Electric Fleet.

Roll forward to February this year 2018.

It was time for a change as, for a long time, my heart had been committed to CleanCar. It was difficult, expensive and time-consuming to run two businesses. So, it was time to make some big decisions.

How it happened –

After a number of conversations, some quite heated ones with my fellow shareholders, we decided it was time to split the business. Send the mileage expenses off in one direction and CleanCar in another. It was agreed that The Virtual Forge, one of our early investors and a leading tech development outfit, would buy a majority shareholding in CleanCar and invest heavily into building the team and developing the platform.

The deal was struck back in June this year. Since then, with a huge amount of activity, the team has tripled in size. The Platform development effort has been tremendous and the result is one that I am extremely proud of.

The aims of CleanCar

The aim of all this effort was to build a system. A system that would be capable of handling millions of users as opposed to just thousands of users. In many respects, It was like building a rally car. In that we kept a shell of a system and rebuilt, updated or tinkered with every component removing anything that was surplus to requirements. Then, put in a much better high performance (electric) engine!


The CleanCar system we have today is the early production system. With all the new shiny parts and the new engine, but like a new rally team we still need to prove ourselves. We have a lot of work to do in learning how users want to interact with the system. Continually upgrading and improving.  To carry on the metaphor a little, we are at the beginning of the rally season but we have a lot of races to win and a lot to learn, especially from you!.

Our plans for the future can be laid out as follows:

  1. We need to continually improve what we have. In other words, we know that users will get in touch to tell us the parts of the system they like. The parts that stink and ‘hey, I have a good idea’! We need to capture all this feedback and use it to continually ideas to
  2. We have a huge pipeline of new features we would like to build. Some features will get done, new ones will get added to the list and some will never see the light of day. The key point is we will always be working on this continual improvement process to make CleanCar better and slicker. We will ensure you get to know all the new ideas and improvements as part of this process.
  3. New ideas: we know that we have some powerful data and we are keen to see what other questions we can answer. For example; is there a city out there looking to electrify its taxis and install fast chargers? Could our system be used to help?

To summarise in a nutshell:

  1. We have a lot of experience helping fleets to switch from ICE vehicles to EV’s
  2. We know the process and platform that works is accurate in informing the ‘switch’ decision
  3. We now want to help private motorists, the consumer, to make the switch to electric mobility
  4. We have a new parent company that shares our goals and beliefs and is funding this change
  5. We have completely rebuilt the system to achieve these goals
  6. We expect some issues to begin with and actively ask for your valuable feedback
  7. We have big plans for further development
  8. We have an amazing team who are loyal, experienced and who all share my passion

“Absolutely yes, so the UK government and many other governments are on a on a mission to try and cut emissions in our cities the research shows that there is no safe level of emissions. It’s causing all sorts of health problems the issue that you have today is there was a lot of transport located or focus on a lot of areas in the city and that’s creating health problems from from poor air quality. One of the solutions to that is to get more electric vehicles replace internal combustion engine vehicles with electric vehicles. Ultimately that’s what CleanCar does you know it is a solution that helps to speed up the adoption of electric vehicles for fleets and for consumers.”

“Absolutely, yeah”

“Yeah, so we can’t lie we have met each other before and so what is Dreamtek’s involvement in CleanCar? What’s the journey been like from from kind of day dot all the way to where now.”

Alex Baker  –

“So, Dreamtek you’ve been involved in CleanCar really forums from day dot.”Dreamtek have built the majority of a technology you know it’s being kind of my vision initially working with the team around Dreamtek you know designers or developers you know the database administrators so on and so forth to actually build the solution and and you know without having you know a DreamTek and the Virtual Forge Team around you know we wouldn’t be where we are today you know we are sister companies at one another you know and it’s been a it’s been a very interesting journey it’s been a great journey clearly was a bit ups and downs it’s technology you know we’re doing things nobody had done has done before.”

“Okay and so it’s very very complex as I’ve told me before but can you give me kind of a high-level grassroots kind of explanation of what CleanCar is and what it aims to do with it’s customers.”

Alex Baker –

“Well CleanCar’s complex behind the scenes but I think really whenever you’re delivering a solution it needs to be simple it often is very complex we’re done behind the scenes. CleanCar really can be can simply summed up, I don’t I suppose the elevator pitch is you know what we do is we take a small device like this and we can distribute that via fleet or directly to a consumer we also have an ID an Android and iPhone app as well and what you do is you place the device in your vehicle and you drive about as normal and all the time data has been sent to the CleanCar System and we’re running and flip that data for a number of different algorithms.

The main thing that we’re able to then do is say number one is that driver suited to an electric vehicle we can then also say of the electric vehicles they are suited to which potentially would be best suited to their requirements and as well as that we’re also able to say if you were to replace a like-for-like internal combustion engine you know the kind of vehicle you’re driving around with in today with a an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle will you actually see any cost savings.

We’re focusing on what’s called whole life cost or total cost of ownership the final piece of a jigsaw and this works quickly while we fleets you know if we’re looking at the fleet and there say you know I have a hundred vehicles they might be replacing thirty of them with electric were then able to say how many charge points two they need where should they put those charge points and what is the ideal mix of charge points you know what kind of killer what charges should they install so really what it enables is somebody to make a very quick decision completely risk-free you know they know that they’re going into it you know doctor electric vehicle but they doing it with their eyes wide open”

“mmm… that’s really interesting so before we get into whether I’m suitable for an electric vehicle and my background is very much automotive, you know I started off with a motor manufacturer when I was 17 years old mostly around sort of gas guzzling rally cars but then went into very much the sort of development of networks and so on to sell vehicles and so on and I also was very lucky enough this year to go to Portugal to the launch of the new Ipace for Jaguar.”

“Yeah I know exactly… it was very cold which was very random to see kind of where we’re at you know right at the coalface of this beautiful car that kind of encapsulated technology but also encapsulates the style of what is a very much heritage name and a heritage brand so I think we’re quite far along but from somebody on the inside of the industry like yourself what is the state of the the EV  market?”

Alex Baker –

“So, I don’t think the industry has done itself any favors up to this point. You know there has been some very strange vehicles I know you started to move ugly I would say yes yeah not necessary ugly but kind of Noddy cars I’ve heard people describe you know these days for cars really look a lot better they’ve got a much better range as in they’ll go a lot further and practicality wise they are as practical as as any other vehicle that’s out there certainly you know one of the things I hear a lot from people who drive electric vehicles is there a lot more fun to drive as well you know they are very very quick we were talking earlier about the P P 100 D test.”

Tom blades –

“Oh yeah of course that’s an absolute yeah yeah yeah yeah.”

Alex baker –

“That’s an absolute monster of a car to drive, the industry needs to do more you know when you look at the stats you know certainly we’re in our database there’s about 20,000 available variants on the market today vehicles.”

Tom Blades –

“Wow, that’s a lot more than I expected or twenty.”

Alex Baker –

“There’s 20,000 available total vehicles only point seven percent of all of those vehicles available electric and around about two percent are hybrid plug-in hybrids so on and so when you actually look at the percentages are available on the market was not a lot to choose from.”

Tom Blades  –

“Yeah and I think that’s it really I mean I remember doing an interview with some of the people within the network of the manufacturer I used to work for and they were screaming for a normal vehicle with an electric variant either you know or motor a very attached to it instead of these kind of newer shaped or kind of moon buggy style as you mentioned so I do want identify with that I mean again. I don’t identify with the facts as well.”

If your vehicle usage profile needs a 400+ mile range then currently (but with not too long to wait) EV cars are probably not the right choice at this moment in time.  Anyway, who needs range of 400 miles if every single day they start with 100 miles of range and have not driven more then 50 miles in a single day (think about that second car). Understanding the electric car technology will allow you to have a better understanding of how the vehicle works.

First things First… Do we believe electric vehicles are right for everyone? No, we don’t!

Technology is improving all the time. Especially electric car technology…

Our view is that as things currently stand, some people/businesses are perfectly suited to owning EV cars or having an Electric Fleet. There are people who would benefit greatly. There are others that due to their travel requirements and vehicle usage profile would not benefit. Finding out the benefits of electric vehicles and how it would be able to adapt to your driving life would be great. That’s why we have the CleanCar system to find out if switching to an EV would be beneficial either personally or as a fleet, this is how it becomes a fleet solution.

In most cases it’s about finding the ‘sweet spot’. This ‘sweet spot’ can be measured based on a driver’s average daily, weekly or monthly mileage pattern. It can be from commuting to work, job type or lifestyle. The sweet spot is usually reflected in a mileage profile that is neither too low, nor too high.

For example –

If your daily mileage is a couple of thousand miles a year an EV car will probably work for you. You are unlikely to see any significant WLC savings if you are not doing enough miles a year. However, this is for the cost benefit overall. If you have a daily commute of 120 miles the EV’s “real” range is just 90 miles. This will result in a charge at least once a day. This may not be feasible or practical for yourself.

Each vehicle has a sweet spot, and they can be quite different from model to model. Those driver profiles that fall within the sweet spot are those who Fleets should target. The target should be at least for short term. These drivers will offer the greatest cost savings and will benefit the most from the switch to electric.


The ‘sweet spot’ of EV cars are constantly widening. Vehicle pricing lowers due to demand coupled with new models with increased range. There is an increase in drivers that are falling into this sweet spot. This is good news for all especially for those running large fleet’s.

Why are UK Fleet’s slow to make the switch to EV’s?

Over the last three years, we have helped a lot of fleets to adopt an ‘EV transition’ policy. CleanCar has helped fleets to make the switch to Electric. During this time, CleanCar has heard plenty of excuses and reasons from Fleets and Drivers that are not currently wanting to make the switch to an Electric Fleet etc. However, some of these reasons are perfectly valid. Most excuses and reasons are simply misinformed and plain wrong.

 Users Just Don’t Fit the Profile:

Above, we talk about ‘sweet spots’ where certain ‘journey profile’ drivers benefit the most. If their usage pattern, especially where their mileage is relatively high (UK company car average is 17k per annum). The analysis shows they would see real cost savings but it is not too high to experience practical ‘range’ issues. Many fleets have drivers who fall outside this profile.

  1. We have seen certain company car or van drivers who only drive twice a week. Although those trips can equate to 500+ miles of driving
  2. There are delivery firms in London who only do 9 miles a day
  3. Some fleets have time-sensitive, last minute delivery commitments where a vehicle charge requirement, even just a 20 minute one, would not be a practical option.
  4. Many company vehicle duty rosters have unknown journey demands that are difficult to plan ahead for

Timing is Bad:

Since the 2008 financial crisis, many companies have had to take tough cost cutting decisions including reductions in employee compensation and overall benefits packages. Some organisations have gone through redundancies as well as removal of some benefits such as healthcare, reduced pension provisions and much more. In these situations, no matter how good an option or EV policy may look, a change to the company vehicle benefit or perk could be seen by employees at all levels, as ‘the last straw ’… Better to leave it on the shelf and take a look in a year or two when things have calmed down perhaps?

They don’t understand the benefit

Fleet management has evolved over the past decade or so and many fleets now have far more complex reporting and policies for making arrangements. Many Fleets do not have a full-time fleet manager’s as in the past. This makes it difficult internally in some businesses to keep up to date on all the aspects of running a fleet. Many don’t understand the true benefits of operating EV cars as part of the various fleet vehicle type ‘usage profiles’ such as a directors company car to the sales reps’ warhorse or the maintenance/engineering staff’s service van. Good news. That’s exactly what this guide is all about!

Kick the can down the road.

Why be a trailblazer when you can let others forge a path and learn from their efforts? Some decision makers within fleet operators are waiting to see what will happen before they make the switch as they would rather play it safe and watch others make the mistakes from which they can learn. The problem with this approach is they are tying themselves into lease contract commitments that can last for 3, 4 or even 5 years. This scenario is a missed opportunity that can and does significantly harm a company’s financial health. Our case studies prove that savings of over £3000 per year per vehicle are achievable for a significant and growing percentage of Fleet vehicle usage profiles.

Indifference, Misinformation and Complexity

Electric Vehicles present a new complexity for fleet management as there is host of new data, new ways of planning and new to processes to implement. Inevitably, with emerging technology driven innovation, there exists significant amounts of misinformation that results in confusion which naturally tends to lead to indifference and apathy with the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” attitude prevailing.

Opportunity cost:

My only comment on this is that this misinformation, confusion, indifference and apathy. It is getting in the way of some potentially significant cost saving benefits. It could make a real difference to your business’s bottom line. In today’s competitive marketplace, it is even more important to clearly understand the potential cost benefit impact of switching all, some or indeed none of your fleet ops to electric mobility. You could unlock some significant cost savings now or, at the very least, find out when you would be ready to do so in the not too distant future.

Petrol Heads:

Some people just like fast cars and believe that petrol vehicles rule! If this is you then I would simply ask you to Google YouTube’s ‘Tesla P100D drag strip’ video and watch this electric seven-seat saloon leaving behind a variety of super expensive supercars, worth four times as much. If you get a chance, have a test drive in any EV. I am confident, you will be very surprised by the impressive torque driven acceleration. It may change your view about petrol vs. electric!

Experts in the EV sector may pick up on my use of terminology in this guide; I make no excuses for sometimes not using the correct terminology. The Electric Vehicle space is confusing enough without the use of dozens of acronyms. The use of dozens of acronyms is that only an ‘EV industry stalwart’ understands. I have designed this guide for those individuals who have direct and indirect responsibility. These individuals would be making decisions about Fleet vehicle procurement and logistical management. Do PHEV’s have a place in your fleet?

The Mitsubishi Outlander is way out in front for Sales. If you check out the sales of “Electric Vehicles” (at the time of writing).

This PHEV claims on its website: Save up to £10,000 in Company Car Tax, With just 41g/km CO2, the Outlander PHEV is only 13% BIK, saving you thousands Official fuel economy: 156.9mpg (EU Combined).

On the face of it, how could you say no? As a company car driver with access to this vehicle you will save a fortune on BIK company car tax. The company will save a fortune with such amazing MPG, it will never need fuel. The problem is this picture, it is unrealistic for many company car drivers.

Things you need to consider with PHEV such as Mitsubishi Outlander (many others are Available):

  • You are unlikely to ever see MPG close to the officially claimed figures. Unless you fit into a very small sweet spot. If this is the case, you will benefit mainly from the battery part of the vehicle.
  • A PHEV is suitable for just about anyone, i.e. it’s going to be practical to use. However the sweet spot range, to see savings is much narrower. The driver needs to be regularly benefiting from the battery, only range with the occasional long trip. Not your typical company car essential user, but maybe a perk user.
  • A PHEV is often a heavy car; after all, it has an engine, a motor and a load of batteries. If you are not using it efficiently, i.e. only doing lots of motorway driving etc. Many drivers who are not using the car properly. We see MPG at around 20% of the claimed MPG rate at best.
  • If the car is not being used properly or as a fleet and you are paying for the fuel, it could end up being much more expensive than an equivalent petrol or diesel.
  • Many drivers love the PHEV because of the reduced BIK, this will change and while they will benefit, you, as a company, will often find that costs increase.
  • Some companies we have come across have drivers who ordered a PHEV and never installed a charger thereby gaining a pure BIK advantage, but no cost-benefit from reduced fuel usage.
  • The second hand value may well be the sting in the tail with these PHEV’s as given the BIK tax break as the main ‘buy decision’ often means that the electric powertrain has not been properly used and the (smaller) ICE engine consequently over used. This is resulting in poor resale condition vehicles with a disappointing residual value that have a negative impact on balance sheet asset values and will inevitably influence higher Fleet lease and finance costs!

In a nutshell:

PHEV are great for many people such as those who do a 20-mile commute most days and the occasional long trip (not the only example). For many traditional company car drivers, they are the wrong choice. A low CO2 Petrol or Diesel may be a far better choice. You need to think carefully about who chooses them and why to get a truly accurate cost benefit picture.

Fleets need to look for potential pockets of Pure EV usage – such as a department or team who have the right ‘sweet spot’ profile.

As an avid fly fisherman, I sometimes spend hours on a boat in an Irish Lough and can catch very little. However, we come across a spot where the fishing is great. We catch every other cast. The sense of fun is restored. My father in law and I like to call these chocolate spots.

To expand on this analogy only slightly more, go where the fishing is good.

Right now for most fleets in the UK, the available vehicle range and technology means a switch to EV is unlikely for your whole fleet. This does not mean you won’t have pockets of vehicles that are perfect for this switch.

A very good real life example is BAE systems who were looking for opportunities to switch and save money so they looked at their naval base in Portsmouth where 50 – 60 vehicles seemed to fit the vehicle usage profiles that would be ideal to switch to EV’s. So have a think about your own fleet; do you have any of the following?

  • A regional or geographical sales/service/maintenance team within a defined area
  • A specific project or customer (NHS Hospital, Local Council) that require a local presence.
  • Any of the above that have a regular long trip but are mostly location specific
  • PERK drivers who take a company car but spend five days a week in the office, just a stone throw from their home.

What behaviors need changing to make the usage profile ‘fit’ to switch?

Often when working with fleets in trying to find this ideal profile of drivers, we come across certain behaviors. This is what makes an EV impractical.

Examples are:

  • The driver has to attend a monthly sales meeting at the head office 200 miles away.
  • The driver has to deliver something occasionally to a customer 150 miles away

Often these events occur only once a month and affect only a few members of the team. It’s worth thinking what behaviors could be changed to address these events that impact the switch decision.

  • Challenge why everyone has to attend a monthly meeting at HQ, could there be a monthly meeting via video conferencing and a quarterly meeting somewhere that’s easily accessible via train
  • If most of the users are on one site, would it be a possibility to retain a pool van/car that can be used for the occasional long trip, especially if the savings are significant even with the addition of a pool vehicle?

Requirements for ChargePoints at Office and at Home

I have heard Charge Point manufacturers say that every person who uses an EV needs 2.3 ChargePoints. One at Home, one in the office and some public charging in between… Of course they would say that they are trying to sell ChargePoints after all!

Ion this basis then I use about 1.2 ChargePoints for my Nissan Leaf; mostly charging at home and the occasional public charge.

I know some businesses that use 0.5 chargers per vehicle, i.e. they have a bank of chargers at the office or depot, where vehicles charge when they need to operate two vehicles per charge point.

Each instance is different, and your requirements will be unique. However, I think in the short term it’s better to be conservative and robust in your requirements.

  1. Be Conservative: By this I mean don’t push the boundaries too far and look for the easy wins. I would recommend switching drivers to EV who at most require the vehicle to be charged at home or office no more than each night (or day if night shifts). I would not recommend looking for the drivers who need to charge 2 or three times per day to make an EV work. The electric vehicle technology is improving and very soon those drivers will fall into the once a day charging profile. So focus on the easy wins and keep an eye on the changing technologies and reassess every few months.
  2. Be Robust: Through our analysis, we often help fleets to understand how many ChargePoints they will require for the EV’s they intend to buy or lease. If for example, our analysis shows they require a minimum of 24 x 7kw for their 50 Electric vans, we would always recommend they go a little higher and plump for say 27 chargers. The cost impact is minimal to the overall cost benefits and it improves the user experience and caters for the occasional high use periods.


Just because we recommend 27 ChargePoints it does not mean it is always possible. The ChargePoint installers will need to check the site first and check it has the grid capacity to operate this number of ChargePoints or outline the works required to bring it up to this capacity and capability.

  • Improvements in public charging network, however still cannot be relied upon.

Often when we speak to fleets, we get questioned about utilising the public charging network as the sole and only way of charging. If this is something you are considering, I would strongly urge you to think again.

As an EV driver, I love the public charging networks, there are some favourites I like to use when I park in the city, and the fast chargers at the services have been a godsend over the years.

Note on home charging:

It’s important to check that your employee has a home suited to a charge point. Otherwise there may not be the option to install one. Things to consider:

  • Does the employee own their home?
  • Do they have approval from a landlord to fit a charger?
  • Is their home in a suitable location, i.e. is it a 3-story flat or a terraced house?
  • Are they in temporary accommodation or about to move to a new house?
  • Are there any restrictions such as being listed or in a conservation area?
  • Is there off street parking and suitable location for a charge point install?
  • Is there any other reason why a home charger is not an option?
  • Also, if they stop being your employee, or move house you should be clear in what happens to the charge point. If you are insisting on recovering your kit then this could cause problems with a house move and surveyor reports etc.

The issues with range vs. range anxiety.

It’s a funny thing when you first drive an EV, as there is no doubt that you, like most people, will get range anxiety. You will see 20 miles of range left, which, if in a petrol or diesel car, would bring you out in a cold scary sweat. You just get used to it. Honestly these days I only start to worry if I hit 7 miles or less.

Let’s not underestimate the impact. As diesel car today, it will do 500 miles on a full tank. An EV will do maybe around 100 Miles. The difference in miles takes some getting used to. That’s why we use the CleanCar process with our customers (more below). We can understand how someone really uses their vehicle, what their journey profile actually means when it comes to range requirements. Then we explain and display this accurate usage profile to them. We explain and prove to the driver that an EV works for their specific usage requirements.

Range Anxiety in many respects is like learning to drive. You start out, and you must think about everything such as changing gear, using the pedals and everything else. However, before long its normal and you don’t even think about it. Range anxiety is something you can’t avoid. You just have to get on with it but it soon disappears, especially with planning, knowledge and experience.

In the future,

Range anxiety will be a forgotten phrase, a bit like the noise of a phone modem connecting; you had to be there for the very short time when it mattered.

Here are some very straightforward tips and advice on how drivers and Fleet managers can gain optimal Electric Vehicle range performance on their vehicles. What we would like to you to do is read through all the tips we have and then encourage your drivers to get the maximum range out of their electric vehicle. What do you think?

As we were saying before, encouraging your drivers to adopt these habits will alleviate any ‘range anxiety’ issues. It ensures both company and employee gains the maximum cost benefits, from switching to low/zero emission transport.

It’s good for profits, pockets and the planet! Why wouldn’t you want to save money? Once you have informed your drivers on how to gain the maximum range out of their vehicle it makes it easier for your drivers to drive around and feel comfortable about being environmentally friendly and knowing they are saving money for themselves and for the business…

How to gain maximum range for the Electric Vehicle’s for your Electric fleet –

  1. It would be beneficial to encourage your driver’s into the habit of pre-planning their electric vehicle charging needs. The drivers need to ensure, whenever possible, they reach the 80% optimal battery charge level. Apart from gaining optimum range, the long term effect will also maintain and extend the battery ‘life’. When recorded regularly it’s at a reliable ‘good condition’ documentation that supports asset resale or lease returns.
  2. When planning a longer trip than normal do remind your drivers to make sure they are aware of more than one or two of the public network charge point locations en route. Charge points can not always be relied upon to either be working or available! However, there are Apps for that such as; Zap-Map, Chargepoint or PlugShare in the app stores.

  3. In cold weather, you will need to recommend to your drivers to have the heater on during the last 20 minutes or so of charging. The minimal heat settings will suffice during the journey. Seat warmers do the trick nicely! You will also need to inform your drivers that if it’s hot weather then the same applies to the air conditioning. When out and about encourage your drivers to park in the shade/sheltered bays for the same reasons as above.

  4. You can encourage your drivers to develop a smooth breaking and acceleration driving style. This will improve the battery performance and range efficiencies as well as safety!

  5. You will need to educate your drivers to try to avoid high speeds, especially over 50 mile per hour given that electric vehicle’s are almost the opposite to petrol & diesel as slow stop/start style city driving suits electric vehicles.

  6. As ever, longer trips in an electric or hybrid vehicle should always be planned. Remind drivers that high cruising speeds on motorways for long periods will reduce the stated range capability.

  7. You should be encouraging your drivers to use their electric vehicles ‘ECO settings’ to aid battery performance and conditioning.

  8. You would need to ask your drivers to test and compare their regular route options. So called ‘faster’ routes could be less range efficient, (higher speed – flat motorway). This would lack regenerative breaking benefits (up hill and down dale!).

Please note – In short, cold and warm weather conditions this uses up more battery power (performance fluctuation caused by extreme temperatures). It also results in heavier use of both power draining vehicle heating and air conditioning systems. Higher speed cruising over longer flat distances drains battery power faster, given the lack of regenerative breaking system benefits.

What is CleanCar? –

How does the CleanCar device work?

The CleanCar device (we must find a catchier name, send all your ideas to it is an incredibly smart piece of kit, but for this FAQ, we will keep it simple…

  • The CleanCar device has been designed to record GPS coordinates of your location while you are driving
  • It will do this every 10 seconds or 100 metres or 25-degree change in direction so on a winding road it takes more coordinates and on a straight one less.
  • The device saves these coordinates and every few minutes it connects to the mobile network via an onboard sim and uploads these to the CleanCar portal. It will store around ten days of driving if for any reason there is no signal.
  • Once we receive the data, we store it up, and while most people are asleep in the early morning, our servers and algorithms convert it into journeys and statistics.
  • The following day you will be able to log in see your stats.
